Children, even newborns, can get an Aadhaar. For children below 5 years, UIDAI issues a Baal Aadhaar (often called the “blue Aadhaar”). No fingerprints or iris scans are taken; it’s linked to a parent’s Aadhaar. Enrolment is free. Here’s who’s eligible, what documents you need, and what happens when your child turns 5 and 15.
The child’s birth certificate (or a hospital discharge slip, depending on the centre’s list of accepted documents)
Aadhaar of one parent or guardian, who must be present
How to apply for Baal Aadhaar
Find an Aadhaar enrolment centre. Many hospitals, post offices and banks have one, or book an appointment through myAadhaar / the UIDAI website.
Take the child, the birth certificate and the parent’s Aadhaar.
Fill in the enrolment form. The parent authenticates with their own biometrics.
The operator takes the child’s photograph.
Collect the acknowledgement slip with the Enrolment ID (EID).
The Baal Aadhaar is sent by post, and you can download the e-Aadhaar once it’s generated.
What happens at age 5 and 15?
The child must give fingerprints, iris scans and a new photo (a mandatory biometric update) at age 5 and again at age 15. Otherwise the Aadhaar can become inactive. Mandatory biometric updates at ages 5–7 and 15–17 are free, and UIDAI has also waived the fee for ages 7–15 for a limited period. Check the UIDAI website for current dates.
