How to Renew Driving Licence Online (Sarathi Parivahan)
You can apply to renew your driving licence online through the Sarathi Parivahan portal. In many states, the renewal is fully faceless with Aadhaar authentication; others need a short RTO visit. Here’s the process, documents, timing rules and fees.
When can you renew?
- You can apply up to one year before the licence expires.
- Renew as soon as possible after expiry. Driving on an expired licence isn’t allowed. Late renewals attract a late fee, and after a long gap (several years) you may have to take the driving test again.
- Exact fees and late fees are set by each state and shown on Sarathi before payment.
Documents
- Your current driving licence
- Aadhaar (for Aadhaar-based authentication)
- Medical certificate in Form 1A, if you’re 40 or older
- Recent photo and signature (captured or uploaded as your state requires)
How to renew your DL online
- Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state.
- Under Driving Licence, choose Services on DL (Renewal / Duplicate / AEDL / IDP / Others).
- Enter your DL number and date of birth, and fetch your details.
- Choose Renewal of DL (and Aadhaar authentication, if offered).
- Upload the documents and pay the fee online.
- Book an RTO slot if your state requires a visit. Otherwise the renewed licence is processed online.
- Save the application number to check your status.
