JEE Main Percentile vs Rank: How Your Score Is Calculated
JEE Main results are given as an NTA percentile, not marks. The percentile tells you what share of candidates in your session scored the same as or less than you. The All India Rank (AIR) is then worked out from your percentile across all candidates. Here’s how it works.
What NTA percentile means
If your percentile is 95, 95% of candidates in your session scored the same as or below you. It’s calculated separately for each shift (normalisation), so candidates in easier and harder shifts are treated fairly.
Formula (simplified)
Percentile = 100 × (number of candidates in your shift with a raw score ≤ yours) ÷ (total candidates in your shift).
Estimating rank from percentile
A rough estimate: expected rank ≈ (100 − your percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100.

These are estimates only. The actual AIR depends on the final number of candidates and tie-breaking rules, and category ranks are calculated separately.
Frequently asked questions
Is percentile the same as percentage?
No. Percentage is your marks out of the maximum; percentile is your position relative to other candidates.
