UPI lets you send and receive money instantly from your bank account using just a phone. Setting it up takes a few minutes. You can set your UPI PIN with your debit card, or with Aadhaar OTP if you don’t have a debit card. Here’s how.
What you need
- A bank account with your mobile number registered
- That SIM in the phone you’re setting up UPI on
- A debit card for the account, or Aadhaar linked to the account and mobile
How to set up UPI
- Install a UPI app: BHIM, your bank’s app, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.
- Verify your mobile number. The app sends an SMS from your phone to confirm it’s your SIM.
- Choose your bank. The app finds accounts linked to your mobile number.
- Select the account. You’ll get a UPI ID (like name@bank).
- Set your UPI PIN:
- With debit card: enter the last 6 digits and expiry date, then the OTP.
- With Aadhaar: choose Aadhaar, enter the first 6 digits, and verify with the Aadhaar OTP and your bank OTP.
- Create a 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN and confirm it.
UPI Lite: small payments without a PIN
UPI Lite is an on-device wallet for small payments. You load a small amount from your bank and pay low-value amounts without entering your UPI PIN. Enable it in apps that support it, such as BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. Per-payment and wallet limits are set by NPCI and shown in the app.
Safety rules
- You never need a PIN to receive money. If someone asks you to enter your PIN “to receive”, it’s a scam.
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP.
- Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
