M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, better known as Chepauk, is Chennai’s international cricket ground and the home of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It sits in Chepauk / Triplicane near Marina Beach, with Wallajah Road, Victoria Hostel Road and Bells Road around it. On match days, roads around the stadium are closed or diverted, so how you arrive matters. Nearest metro station to Chepauk Stadium
Government Estate metro station is the closest, about a 200-metre walk from the stadium. This is also the station used for the free match-day metro scheme.
Free metro and bus travel with your match ticket
For CSK home matches in recent IPL seasons, Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) and MTC have let ticket holders travel free on match day:
- A valid match ticket (digital or physical) covers one round trip between any metro station and Government Estate.
- Scan the ticket’s QR code at the metro’s automatic gates.
- MTC buses have also accepted match tickets for free travel to and from the stadium.
This scheme is announced match by match, so check CMRL or CSK’s announcement before your game.
By local train (MRTS)
Chepauk MRTS station on the Chennai Beach–Velachery line is about 200 metres from the stadium, a good option from south Chennai.
Chepauk Stadium parking
Parking near Chepauk is very limited on match days. Based on the Greater Chennai Traffic Police’s IPL arrangements:
- With a car pass: park only at the location printed on your pass (separate lots are allotted to different pass types).
- Without a car pass: drive via Cathedral Road and R.K. Salai to Kamarajar Salai (Marina Beach Road), park on the Marina Beach service road, then walk about 500 metres to the stadium using the subways.
- Wallajah Road and nearby streets: expect no-parking zones and diversions (typically from late afternoon on evening match days). Vehicles parked there can be towed.
- Two-wheelers: use the parking marked by traffic police on the day. There’s no reserved bike parking at the stadium for general ticket holders.
Auto, cab and bus drop-off
- Autos, taxis and app cabs: have been directed via Anna Salai and Wallajah Road to drop passengers near the stadium on Swami Sivananda Salai or the Marina Beach swimming pool service road.
- MTC and special buses: aren’t allowed on Wallajah Road. They stop on Swami Sivananda Salai, about a 300 m walk via Press Club Road.
Tickets and entry gates
- Tickets: CSK sells home-match tickets online through its website, the CSK app and District (by Zomato). Online tickets are e-tickets with a QR/barcode, scanned at the gate. Download yours in the app before you leave, as mobile signal near the stadium is poor on match days.
- Your gate: the gate number and stand are printed on your ticket, and you must use that gate. Gates are spread around the ground on Wallajah Road, Victoria Hostel Road and Bells Road, so check which road your gate is on before you arrive.
- Arrive early: gates usually open a couple of hours before the start. Security checks take time for evening matches.
Things not allowed in Chepauk Stadium
The prohibited-items list printed for Chepauk matches is strict. Leave these at home:
- Power banks, chargers, cables and earphones, and any gadget with a removable dry-cell or button-cell battery
- Bags, including laptop bags and plastic bags, plus helmets and umbrellas
- Outside food, drinks, water bottles, thermos flasks and water jugs
- Coins, metal objects, binoculars and cameras
- Cigarettes, beedis, gutka, pan masala, lighters and matchboxes (the stadium is a tobacco-free zone)
- Crackers, flammable items, knives, razors, scissors, mirrors and glass items
What to carry: your mobile phone with the e-ticket, a small wallet, and a government photo ID in case it’s asked for.
