IPL Playoffs Format Explained: Qualifiers, NRR and Rain Rules
The IPL playoffs decide the champion from the top four teams of the league stage. The top two get two chances to reach the final, while the third- and fourth-placed teams must win twice in a row. This guide explains the format, how the points table and net run rate work, and what happens if rain hits a playoff or the final.
A win is worth 2 points. A no-result or abandoned match gives 1 point each. A loss gives 0. A tie is settled by a Super Over, so there’s a winner.
Teams level on points are separated by net run rate (NRR).
The top four teams qualify for the playoffs.
How net run rate (NRR) works
NRR = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled), across the whole season.
If a team is bowled out, it’s counted as having faced its full quota of overs (usually 20), not the overs it actually batted.
Winning big (a large run margin, or chasing quickly) raises NRR. Heavy defeats lower it.
In the final league games, teams chasing a playoff spot often calculate exactly how fast they must chase or how much they must win by to overtake a rival’s NRR.

That’s why finishing in the top two matters so much: a team that loses Qualifier 1 still gets another chance in Qualifier 2.
What happens if it rains in the playoffs?
Extra time: Qualifier 1, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 have extra time (about 120 minutes) built in, so overs are reduced only after that is used up.
Minimum overs: a result needs at least 5 overs per side.
Super Over: if a playoff match is tied, or can’t be completed but a Super Over is possible, the Super Over decides it.
No play possible: if not even a Super Over can be played, the team that finished higher in the league table goes through.
Final: the final has a reserve day. If no result is possible on the reserve day either, the team placed higher in the league stage is declared champion.
They play Qualifier 1, and the loser still gets a second chance in Qualifier 2. Third and fourth must win both the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 to reach the final.
Is there a reserve day for Qualifier 1 or the Eliminator?
No. Only the final has a reserve day. The other playoff matches use extra time, then a Super Over, then league position.
