How to Join the IPL: Trials, Selection Process and Auction Explained
There’s no application form to join the IPL. Players get into IPL teams through the BCCI domestic cricket system: district cricket, then state teams, then scouting and franchise trials, and finally the IPL auction. This guide explains each step, what you need, and how to avoid fake “IPL trial” scams.
Club and academy cricket affiliated to your District Cricket Association.
District trials and inter-district tournaments (under-14, under-16, under-19, senior).
State team: age-group and senior teams in BCCI tournaments.
Scouting and franchise trials: IPL teams watch domestic cricket and invite players they rate.
IPL auction: your state association registers you, and franchises bid.
Step 1: Play for an affiliated club or academy
State associations pick players from their own leagues. Join an academy or club that plays in your district or state association’s official league, so your performances are recorded. Selectors rarely pick players with no record in recognised matches.
Step 2: District and state selection
District associations hold trials and pick teams for inter-district tournaments. Strong performers go to state probables camps, then into state teams for BCCI tournaments:
Level
BCCI tournaments
Under-16
Vijay Merchant Trophy
Under-19
Cooch Behar Trophy (multi-day), Vinoo Mankad Trophy (one-day)
IPL franchises have scouting teams that follow domestic cricket, especially the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and state T20 leagues such as the TNPL and Maharaja Trophy.
Scouts invite promising players to franchise trials before the auction. These are by invitation. Franchises don’t charge players to attend.
Consistent numbers in T20 cricket (runs at a good strike rate, wickets with good economy) matter more than one big innings.
Step 4: The IPL auction
Registration: Indian players are registered for the auction through their state cricket association. The BCCI then shortlists the final auction pool from all registrations.
Uncapped players (who haven’t played for India) appear in the list under their state association.
Base price: each player picks a base price where bidding starts. The lowest tier for uncapped Indian players in the IPL 2026 auction was ₹30 lakh.
Players can also be signed as replacement players during the season, from the registered pool.
Documents you’ll need
Proof of age: birth certificate and school records. The BCCI runs strict age-verification checks for age-group cricket, including medical bone tests for younger players.
Identity proof: Aadhaar and PAN (needed for contracts and payments). Make sure the details match: see PAN–Aadhaar link status.
Bank account in your name for match fees and contract payments.
Overseas players need a no-objection certificate (NOC) from their national board.
Beware of fake IPL trial scams
Every season, fraudsters advertise paid “IPL trials” or “registration” on social media and charge fees. Official BCCI, state and franchise selection doesn’t work through paid public registration. Don’t pay anyone who promises IPL selection. Check trial announcements on your state association’s official website.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join the IPL without playing domestic cricket?
Very rarely. Almost every IPL player came through state cricket or top-level cricket abroad. Franchise trials are also mostly for players already in the state system.
What is the minimum age to play in the IPL?
There’s no low minimum age in practice. Players as young as 14 have been picked, but they had already played senior state cricket. Focus on getting into your state’s age-group teams.
Do IPL teams hold open trials?
Occasionally, for specific regions or talent hunts. Genuine ones are announced on the franchise’s official website or social accounts, and they’re free.
