The ATM didn’t give you cash, but money was debited from your account? This is common, and RBI rules protect you. The bank must auto-reverse the amount within a fixed time, and pay you compensation if it’s late.
It must pay you ₹100 per day of delay, on its own, without you asking
Also counts?
A failed withdrawal shouldn’t be counted in your free ATM transactions
This is under RBI’s framework on turnaround time (TAT) and customer compensation for failed transactions.
What to do
Keep the ATM slip or note the ATM location, date, time and amount.
Wait a day or two. Most failed withdrawals reverse automatically.
If not reversed, complain to your bank (your own bank, even if you used another bank’s ATM) through customer care, net banking or the branch. Get a complaint reference number.
If there’s no fix within 30 days, or you’re unhappy with the reply, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a failed ATM transaction take to reverse?
The RBI limit is 5 days after the transaction (T+5). Many reverse sooner.
Will I get compensation automatically?
RBI requires banks to pay ₹100 per day of delay beyond T+5 without waiting for a claim. If it isn’t credited, raise it in your complaint.
