How to Cancel Train Ticket on IRCTC (e-Ticket and Counter Ticket)

Last reviewed on · By Easy Guide India Editorial Team

You can cancel an IRCTC e-ticket online in under a minute, on the IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. The refund goes back to your payment method. Counter tickets can also be cancelled online if you have the PNR and the mobile number used during booking.

Cancel an e-ticket (booked online)

  1. Log in at irctc.co.in or in the IRCTC Rail Connect app.
  2. Go to My Account → My Transactions → Booked Ticket History (in the app: My Bookings).
  3. Select the ticket and click Cancel Ticket.
  4. Tick the passengers you want to cancel. You can cancel some and keep others.
  5. Check the refund amount shown and confirm.
  6. You’ll get an SMS and email with the refund details.

Cancel a counter (PRS) ticket online

  1. On IRCTC, use Cancel Ticket → Counter Ticket.
  2. Enter the PNR, train number and captcha, then the OTP sent to the mobile given when booking.
  3. Confirm the cancellation, then collect the refund at a reservation counter within the allowed time, taking the original ticket.

How much will I get back?

It depends on how early you cancel and the ticket status. See the full IRCTC refund rules. In short: cancelling more than 72 hours before departure costs only a flat charge, while cancelling less than 8 hours before gives no refund on a confirmed ticket.
