IRCTC Tatkal Booking: Timings, Aadhaar OTP Rule & Fast Booking Steps
Tatkal is Indian Railways’ quota for last-minute travel. Bookings open one day before the journey, and seats on popular trains sell out in minutes. Since July 2025, Aadhaar OTP authentication is mandatory for online Tatkal bookings. Here are the timings, rules and a routine that gives you the best chance of a confirmed ticket.

“One day before” is counted from the date the train leaves its origin station, excluding the journey date.
Key Tatkal rules
- Aadhaar OTP: your IRCTC account must be Aadhaar-authenticated, and an OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile during online Tatkal booking.
- Up to 4 passengers per PNR.
- Agents can’t book Tatkal in the first 30 minutes of the opening window.
- Confirmed Tatkal tickets are not refundable on cancellation (except in cases like train cancellation).
- Tatkal charges are added to the base fare and depend on the class, with a minimum and maximum. IRCTC shows the exact amount.
How to prepare the day before
- Aadhaar-verify your IRCTC account (My Account → Authenticate User) well in advance.
- Create a Master List of passengers (My Profile → Master List) so you don’t type names during the rush.
- Keep your UPI app or payment method ready. UPI and IRCTC eWallet are usually fastest.
- Note the train number, class and boarding station.
Booking steps on the day
- Log in a few minutes before 10:00 / 11:00 AM on the IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app.
- Search your route and date, and select TATKAL quota.
- At opening time, choose the train and class and click Book Now.
- Add passengers from your Master List and complete the Aadhaar OTP.
- Pay quickly. Seats are held only for a short time.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket?
You can cancel, but there’s no refund for a confirmed Tatkal ticket. Waitlisted Tatkal tickets can be cancelled with the applicable charges.
Is Aadhaar needed for Tatkal at the counter?
Railways has also introduced OTP-based verification for Tatkal bookings at counters and through agents. Carry the mobile linked to your Aadhaar.
