Sensex, Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty are stock market indices. Each one tracks a basket of shares so you can see in one number how the market, or a sector, is doing. The Sensex tracks 30 large companies on the BSE, the Nifty 50 tracks 50 on the NSE, and Bank Nifty tracks the biggest banking stocks on the NSE.

The BSE Sensex is India’s oldest index. Its 30 companies are chosen by size, liquidity and sector representation. When people say “the market rose 500 points”, they usually mean the Sensex.
The Nifty 50 covers 50 companies across more sectors, so it’s a broader measure than the Sensex. Most index funds and ETFs in India track it, and it is the most traded index in the derivatives market. Because the two share many of the same large companies, the Sensex and Nifty usually move in the same direction on a given day.
Nifty Bank tracks the most liquid, largest private and public-sector banks. Under SEBI’s rules for indices with derivatives, it must hold at least 14 stocks, with no single stock above 20% weight and the top three together at no more than 45%. NSE moved to this structure in stages up to March 2026. Earlier the index had 12 banks, dominated by a few.
The same reasons explain why banking stocks often rise or fall together: they share the same economic drivers.
NSE also publishes sector indices such as Nifty IT (the largest listed IT services companies), Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG. Nifty IT is sensitive to the US economy, the rupee–dollar rate and client tech spending, because most Indian IT revenue comes from abroad. See what moves share prices.
SEBI studies have repeatedly found that most individual traders lose money in futures and options.
Check live and historical values on the official NSE and BSE websites, or niftyindices.com for index factsheets and constituent lists. The market is open 9:15 am to 3:30 pm IST, Monday to Friday, except exchange holidays.
You can’t buy an index directly. You invest through an index fund or ETF. Nifty 50 funds are more common and slightly more diversified, but long-term returns of the two have been very similar.
They started from different base values and years, so the point levels aren’t comparable. Compare percentage changes instead.
At least 14, under SEBI’s rules for derivative indices. Check the current list in the Nifty Bank factsheet on niftyindices.com.
